22nd annual Dragon Boat Race

What's New — By Natasha John on June 18, 2010 at 9:58 pm

Music, shopping, food and world-class Dragon Boat racing are taking over False Creek this weekend. The Rio Tinto Alcan Dragon Boat Festival is the baddest (and largest) Dragon Boat festival in North America and they have certainly had much practice getting it right, as this is their 22nd year! The base of the festival is scattered closely around Science World and looks much like a white tent village; you can’t miss it!

The opening ceremony is tonight (Friday, June 18, 2010) and the racing takes place over the next two days. There are literally hundreds of people participating in the races, so you don’t need to worry about missing any of the action.

On the World Beat stage, music will groove from 11am-6pm, with varying types of bands and music. If you find yourself getting a bit peckish, there are a handful of brands that will be sampling food and drinks. Did I mention that the event is free? Yes, free entertainment, free food and free music.

If you’re on a budget and looking to do something different for your dad on Sunday, why not spend part Father’s Day at the Dragon Boat races? Car Free day is also a free event, so your choice for cheap and cheerful (while spending quality time) is pretty open on Sunday.

This map is helpful to see where all the festivities will be happening.
