The annual Polar Bear Swim

If you’re not fighting a headache tomorrow morning, or you feel like a (very) refreshing (see: freezing) swim in the ocean, then head down to English Bay for the Polar Bear Swim. In 1920 a group of people started this annual tradition of dipping into the Pacific Ocean on January 1. What started with ten swimmers has now grown into an event where thousands of people brave the cold water to say they did the Polar Bear Swim. If you would like to take part “officially”, you can register down at English Bay in front of the Boathouse restaurant from 12:30pm-2:30pm. The swim is set to take place at 2:30pm on January 1, 2011.

Swimmers sans polar bear fur take a plunge.
