Vancouver is a city that loves music, especially the many free summer concerts that grace the many stages, beach, streets and parks around Vancouver. The Coastal Jazz & Blues Society puts together the Vancouver International Jazz Festival each year and it attracts acts from around the world and brings people into the city to take advantage of the free concerts. There are also a number where purchasing tickets is necessary, but there are plenty of free concerts to check out. This year the festival is running from June 24 – July 3 and you can check out the free concerts at City Square here, and The Vancouver Sun Stage here. The Vancouver Sun Stage is right in the heart of Gastown and you can enjoy the music from a number of the patios scattered around Gastown.
A new event is happening this summer and it’s in honor of Vancouver’s 125th birthday. And, let’s just say, she really knows how to throw a party. The City of Vancouver has put together a really fantastic line-up of artists that will be taking the stage for our listening pleasure and they’ve got all the bases covered from reggae, classical, world beat, jazz, swing, blues and folk. The Vancouver Symphony Orchestra will be holding the fort down in the classical genre, while Celso Macahado will be shaking up the Latin scene and Sojourners will be raising it up gospel style.
There are some pretty fantastic big headliners that locals are pretty excited about. Vancouver’s own golden boy, Dan Mangan sells out shows whenever he’s in Vancouver, so don’t be surprised to see a full audience for him. The New Pornographers, Mother Mother, Hannah Georgas, Neko Case, We Are the City and Dr. L Subramaniam, The Zolas, Hey Ocean!, Said the Whale, and the very lovely Be Good Tanyas are just some of the talent you will hear belting out their music during Summer Live. For complete listings and times, check out Celebrate Vancouver 125’s website.
Summer is sounding pretty fantastic already!
