Description:
This church was a Gothic structure in the 13th century but, like so many others, was altered and restored at the expense of its original design. Still, it's one of Bologna's most interesting churches, filled with art treasures. The Bentivoglio Chapel (Cappella Bentivoglio) is the most sacred haunt, although time has dimmed the luster of its frescoes. Near the altar, seek out a Madonna and Child enthroned, one of the most outstanding works of Francesco Erancia. The holy pair is surrounded by angels and saints, as well as by a half-naked Sebastian to the right. Nearby is a sepulcher of Antonio Bentivoglio, designed by Jacopo della Quercia, who labored so long over the doors to the Basilica of San Petronio. In the Chapel of Santa Cecilia (Cappella di Santa Cecilia), you'll discover important frescoes by Francia and Lorenzo Costa.
