Windsurfing is the unofficial sport of Bonaire. The setting is pristine Lac Bay boasting gin clear water and shallow sea to the bottom with hip high depths. A talent hotbed of sailors has cropped up from this 112 square mile island of 15,000 people. 3 of the world's top freestyle windsurfers hail from Bonaire often dominating the Professional Windsurfing Associations Freestyle World Tour. Two brothers, Tonky and Taty Frans and their cousin Kiri Thode have stood at many a podium around the world. The entire island embraces the sport and regards the sailors as rock stars. Multigenerations come watch the sailors compete and train on weekends. The island hosted 3 professional freestyle events and continues to host Pro Kids, an international racing and freestyle competition. With two rentals shops each offering high performance gear and instruction, windsurf wanna be's and the hard core sailor can come to Bonaire to hone their skills or simple revel in the near perfect on shore conditions.
