Description:

The Maine State Aquarium does a great job of introducing youngsters, as well as adults, to the state's prominent ocean ecology. Several hands-on exhibits are especially popular with children including the Shark Touch Tank featuring dogfish and skates (don't worry, they're safe to touch!) and the Tide Pool Touch Tank with its sea urchins, horseshoe crabs, sand dollars and sea stars. The Coast of Maine exhibit provides a comprehensive overview of the sea life and offshore environment that has long been vital to life in the Pine Tree State. Finally, the Lobster Theater traces the rich legacy of lobstering in Maine. While the aquarium is geared toward the younger set, adults may find it interesting, as well. Plan on spending several hours at the aquarium but note that it is only open seasonally.
