Top 10:

Bordeaux Off The Beaten Path Restaurants

  • The Best of NileGuide
  • You will be spoiled for choice when choosing a bite to eat in Bordeaux, with an array of wonderful restaurants scattered around the city. The old part of town is by far the best place to dine out if you are looking for a lively atmosphere and picturesque setting. Areas such as St Pierre and St Michel are abounding with quaint little restaurants offering traditional French cuisine at affordable prices. Most provide menus translated into English, and are happy to cater for big groups and families with young children. Often the Menu du Jours will offer a three course set menu, for about 17 Euros, and will usually include dishes from traditional Bordeaux cuisine such as Entrecote a la Bordelaise, a rib beef cooked in wine, or Agneau de Pauillac, lamb from the salt marshes around Pauillac. Other than the more traditional menus, international food is readily available around this area, with various Italian pizza places, an Indian eatery and tapas bars.

For a light lunchtime option, there are many little cafes offering a great baguette or French soup to pick up when on the go. Cafe Karl is a very seductive brunch cafe, especially if you are hungry for vegetarian delights. The smell of fresh baked croissant will tempt you in, and the big helpings of salads, amazing pastries and bowls of steaming hot chocolate will be enough to keep you there until teatime.

For more top end restaurants, around the Grand Hommes district is the best place to find more traditional French restaurants boasting gastronomic gourmet. Bordeaux is also proud to be one of the few cities that homes the iconic Entrecote steak restaurant. The three story high building is always packed with people, who have often queued out the door and around the corner for a table. Everyone is seemingly desperate to get their helping of the top-secret sauce that accompanies the famous Entrecote steak, and the free flowing French fries. Food is served with rapidity, and so after a quick tasty feed you will have the time to finish off your evening with a wander down to the nearby Quay, and digest your food over a well-earned aperitif.
