For a relatively young country, the United States features a lot of interesting buildings from the 18th century, a few from the 17th. The oldest sections of Boston include the old State House where the Declaration of Independence was first read to citizens from the balcony, Paul Revere's home & the Old North Church, which is where the lantern was hung as a message to the early riders: The British are coming. Beacon Hill is among the oldest neighborhoods, with beautiful architecture & leaded glass windows overlooking the Common, which was originally used as a meadow for live stock.
If you have time & inclination, a trip to Plimoth Plantation is always interesting; it is near the place where the Pilgrims came ashore & built their settlement, complete nowadays with re-enactors. Along with this site, there is the restored Williamsburg, farther west.
I do recommend the Boston Duck Tours, amphibious vehicles that go along the oldest surface streets & then in to the Charles River for the rest of the time. This is about an hour & half long, very informative but also great fun.
If you just walk around in Copley Square, too, you get Trinity Church which was designed by Richardson, the Arlington Street & Old South Churches too. Then, in one direction is the Public Garden which is really charming at any time of year, and nearby in the other direction is the glorious Boston Public Library.
