- This trail cuts deep into the wilderness, offering an excellent high mountain winter experience. Snow conditions are generally good, the principal antagonist being wind. As a consequence, good physical conditioning and equipment are very important.
Be alert to avalanche hazards, especially above Blue Lake and Lake Isabelle. Be prepared for sudden, adverse weather changes in this area.
Ski west on the Walthrop North Trail for 2.7 miles. At the intersection with Long Lake Road, turn right. Ski .2 mile west on the Long Lake Trail to the east end of Long Lake. Turn either left (south) to take the Jean Luning Trail around the south edge of the Lake or right (north) and take the Pawnee Pass Trail. At this point, advanced skiers may wish to ski 1 mile west on the Pawnee Pass Trail to reach Lake Isabelle or along the creek, avoiding the possible avalanche runs on either side of a rocky knoll at the head of the valley southeast of Isabel. The return trip from Long Lake is 3.5 miles. From the Brainard Lake Road, Return on the Walthrop South Loop, or if snow conditions permit, the Brainard Lake Road.
