Description:
- This is a moderately difficult trail, west of Ward. The trail affords fine views of the Indian Peaks from Brainard Lake. It is one of the most heavily used touring routes on the Front Range. Weekend parking may be unavailable after 10:00 am. It enters meadowy areas which may have erratic snow cover due to winds. Although easy to get to and easy to ski, be prepared for drifting on the road and sudden, adverse changes in weather.
Skiers more experienced at negotiating hilly sections and side slopes may wish to use this North Trail rather than the Waldrop South Loop. Go 50 yards west of the road barrier and follow the trail as it drops to the right (north) of the road. After about 1 mile a cutoff to the left (south) leads toward the Brainard Lake Road. For a short loop trip of 2.5 miles, take this cutoff crossing Brainard Lake Road to the Waldrop South Loop. Turn left (east) at the trail intersection or return to the parking area. For a longer tour, stay to the right at the cutoff and follow the trail signs west for 2.6 miles. The trail intersects with the western end of the Brainard Lake Road. Turn left (south) and follow the road for 0.2 mile. Trail markings for the Waldrop South Loop are located in the trees east of the clearing. Return the 2.5 miles via the Waldrop South Loop, or if snow conditions permit, via the Brainard Lake Road.
