Description:

  • This is a relatively easy trail, west of Ward. The trail affords fine views of the Indian Peaks from Brainard Lake. It is one of the most heavily used touring routes on the Front Range. Weekend parking may be unavailable after 10:00 am. The western end of the trail enters meadowy areas which may have erratic snow cover due to winds. Although easy to get to and easy to ski, be prepared for drifting on the road and sudden, adverse changes in weather.

Beginner skiers are encouraged to use this South Loop. Go 50 yards west of the road barrier and follow the South Loop trail to the left (south) of the road. After the first short hill the trail is mostly level for 2.5 miles west to Brainard lake. Return on the same route, or with favorable snow conditions, the Brainard Lake Road may be used. Directions: Follow Colorado Highway 72 north to Ward. Take the Brainard Lake Road County Road #102 west 2.6 miles to the closure and park facing downhill at the bulletin board. The road may drift so be prepared.
