A Family Trip to Breckenridge

Description:

Back in the 1800s, a careless cartographer neglected to put Breckenridge on the map. Util the mistake was discovered and corrected, the town was known as Colorado's Kingdom. Although Breckenridge is now one the most famous destinations in Colorado, its townspeople like to celebrate its former “kingdom” status. As such, in each year, the town celebrates Kingdom Days, an event that features living history reenactments, historic walking tours, gold panning, old western gun fights, and, would you believe, outhouse races. The event is free, and if you stay at the budget-friendly Fireside Inn, this will be the ultimate family vacation. Spend your first day adjusting to the altitude and hanging out in or near the in. The owners have two adorable standard poodles, which the kids will enjoy. The Fireside Inn is across the street from the Father Dyer Church. Dyer was the minister who traveled from town to town on his skis, delivering the mail, along with the word of God. You can see stain glassed images of Mr. Dyer in the church windows.

Day 1 - Breckenridge

Spend your first day adjusting to the altitude and hanging out in or near the in. The owners have two adorable standard poodles, which the kids will enjoy. The Fireside Inn is across the street from the Father Dyer Church. Dyer was the minister who traveled from town to town on his skis, delivering the mail, along with the word of God. You can see stain glassed images of Mr. Dyer in the church windows. Later on, take a stroll and explore French and Harris Streets. This is a part of Breckenridge that tourists rarely visit, and it's a shame. Since it's illegal to tear down historic buildings, you can find stunning examples of Victorian architecture on these two streets. Kids usually describe these homes as being "out of a fairy tale."

Day 2 - Breckenridge

After enjoying breakfast at the Fireside Inn, you might want to spend a day exploring the Country Boy Mine. If your kids are nit really into mining history, or if you feel that three days of educational activities will put the into information overload, walk over to Main Street and visit the playground near the Riverwalk Center. The rides were made from materials that were used in the mining era. Stop by Peek-a-Boo Toys at 117 South Main Street. This interactive toy store allows you to play with electric racing tracks, alligator pull toys and other unique contraptions. Here's a bit of insider info about the store. During the 1860s, the store housed the Denver Hotel, which was the site of the famous Pug Ryan robbery. Robert Foote, the owner of the hotel, had hisgold watch stolen, but years later, it was recovered by a group of children, who discovered that it was buried in the Town of Kokomo. The watch was returned to its owner. Today, the watch is owned by Breckenridge resident Robin Foote's who is Robert Foote's great grandson.

Day 5 - Breckenridge

Enjoy your wonderful homemade breakfast at the Fireside Inn, before you pack up and head for home! If you have time to shop, the newly opened Altitude Gallery, located at 107 North Main Street, has some fantastic photographs of the area. Even if your kids are not interested in photography, they will enjoy hearing about the area. The building was once home to Choy's laundry. Although Choy was famous for his excellent skills, he had a method that bothered the Victorian ladies. To sprinkle the shirt prior to ironing, he would put the rinse water in his mouth, and spray it over the shirts. Although Choy never worked the mines, he profited from the mining era. When draining the rinse water, he collected pieces of gold form the miner's pockets, which eventually amounted to a reasonable sum of money!
