National Cannon Collection

• A visit to the Garrison Savannah reveals a wondrous display of cannons around its perimeter. These cannon form part of the National Cannon Collection, relics from the British Military past of the 17th to 19th Centuries. Due to its geographic location, just east of the Caribbean chain, Barbados was an important strategic base for the British military, which strenuously guarded the sugar riches of the British colonial islands. The most famous of the cannons is a Commonwealth cannon, bearing the Coat of Arms of Oliver Cromwell. The only other cannon which exists with Cromwell's Coat of Arms is located in the Tower of London. -Marsilyn Browne
