Kemptown is a grittier area of the city but it's so alternative and gay friendly, you'll love it. Kemptown is quite a hip place and there are many great restaurants to choose from. Description:
The Doughnut is right near the pinnacle of all Brighton attractions, the Pier. The Pier is the centre of everything. You have the arcades and the candy floss, the rides and the terrible foods that are terribly naughty to eat. The statue itself is a marmite sort of deal, either you like it or you don't. It's kind of a weird looking thing.

Description:
Located in the heart of North Laine, this place is a mecca for Brighton's younger (at heart) crowd. A pleasant pub during the day, it gets lively on Friday and Saturday nights. The Mash Tun has two floors - downstairs is the main social area, adorned with totem poles and vaguely Mexican and Native American art; upstairs is the smaller "chill-out room" with brightly coloured, slightly insane modern art on the walls, large, comfy sofas and easy chairs. They do a variety of cocktails and have the usual lagers and bitters as well as Hoegaarden, a pricey but gorgeous Belgian beer. Pub food is available every day until 8pm.

Placed right next to Churchill Square shopping centre, this one-time small traditional pub has been transformed into a trendy modern bar. Minimalist modern décor prevails. Light coffee coloured walls and funky mirrors near the fireplace create space. Try a good selection of shooters and spirits. Bottles of Wild Brew (vodka, cranberry and caffeine drink) certainly wakes up tired eyes. A popular pre club bar, nights can be busy, although there's seating outside in summer.

One of the finest early Gothic Revival churches in the UK, built between 1824-1828 by Sir Charles Barry, who later designed the Houses of Parliament. Barry designed an ambitious tower to provide a termination to the north end of the Old Steine. The lower part of the tower has a buttressed screen with flying buttresses at the four corners, allowing for three high entrances. The interior is less impressive, but St Peter's nevertheless became the parish church of Brighton in 1873.

Browns is a upscale restaurant that serves fantastic burgers and elegant drinks. This is an elegant place to come for a drink and a bite to eat. The clientel in Browns are mainly urban professionals so somewhat sophisticated dress is recommended.
Description:
Browns has been a favourite local restaurant for well over ten years - its eclectic well-presented food and relaxed atmosphere continues to pull in the crowds. The decor at Browns creates a fresh and exclusive feel. Light wooden floors and pale walls are separated by a generous interjection of palm trees that takes its diners back to the colonial era. One thing about Browns is that you can always rely on the menu to include some good staple pasta, salad and meat-dishes. Prices for main courses tend to hover around the £10 level, but servings are generous, often making a starter superfluous. Service is attentive and friendly, although some of the waiters can get a little stressed during the busy periods.

Drinkers are usually from late twenties onwards. The crowd can differ greatly, from office workers to real alers and virtually anyone requiring refreshment in a cosy setting. Harveys beers (including mild and pale ale), Addlestons strong cider, Grolsch, Tennants lager and Guinness may be purchased plus wines and spirits. Food is served every lunchtime apart from Sundays. A tempting menu with a range of dishes includes chicken and pepper kebabs with salad fries and chilli dipping sauce or nachos (salsa, guacomole, sour cream and melted cheese).

Our Local Expert Says:
Pizza Express is more than a restaurant. It's a national institution! The Brighton branch has exceptionally good ambiance and pictures of local residents adorn the walls. This is an excellent Pizza Express.
Description:
A firm favourite across the whole country, Pizza Express always satisfies and rarely disappoints. If the comfort of a nationwide chain, but with plenty of individuality is for you, look no further. The decor is sleek and chic, with clean modern lines throughout. Despite dark flooring; the strategic lighting and bright touches gives the interior a warm, but elegant feel. In some branches (Hove), the pizzas are prepared and cooked in an open plan kitchen so you can see what is going on. As far as clientele goes, it attracts just about everyone but seems particularly popular with the younger generation. My personal favourite is the American Hot, fabulous succulent pepperoni, with a beautifully crisp base. Add a drizzle of their spicy oils and hey presto! Of course, the selection of Italian and French wines will help to put out the heat. The branch at Church Road, Hove, has jazz music sessions at 7:30p every Tuesday.
