Description:

  • Floyd Bennett Field, part of the Jamaica Bay Unit of Gateway National Recreation Area, is home to NYC's first municipal airport. Famous pioneers, Amelia Earhart and Charles Lindbergh, frequented the airfield. Vintage aircraft stored in old hangars can be viewed on a guided tour. There's plenty of activities for nature lovers too -- hiking the North 40 trail where over 180 species of birds have been recorded or biking along the abandoned airfields. There's fishing, an archery range and a model plane flying field. NYC's largest community garden is here, and it's the only place where you can camp legally in NYC! See the National Park Service website for detailed seasonal program information.
