Gateway National Recreation Area - Brooklyn

  • Description:

    • Gateway NRA encompasses more than 26,000 acres of marshes, wildlife sanctuaries, sandy beaches as well as historic structures, old military installations, airfields, a lighthouse and adjacent waters around New York Harbor. Divided into three areas across two states, the park extends from Sandy Hook, New Jersey, through Staten Island, New York, and into the Jamaica Bay and Rockaway Peninsula areas of Brooklyn and Queens, New York. This park offers urban residents a wide range of recreational opportunities and educational perspectives throughout the year. Gateway and Golden Gate National Recreation Areas in San Francisco were the first urban recreation areas.

Visitors to this site can explore a wildlife refuge, historic forts and airfields, and an extensive beach. Recreation opportunities include beach recreation, fishing, picnicking, golf, horseback riding, cycling, inline skating, jogging and organized athletics.

Gateway National Recreation Area is located in New York City south of Brooklyn and Queens and on the southern shore of Staten Island. It extends into Monmouth County, New Jersey.
