Description:
This beautiful Gothic structure was built in the late 1300s, making it the oldest town hall in Belgium. Don't miss the upstairs Gotische Zaal (Gothic Room) and its ornate decor and wall murals depicting highlights of Bruges's history. Most spectacular of all is the vaulted oak ceiling, dating from 1385 to 1402, which features scenes from the New Testament. The statues in the niches on the Town Hall facade are 1980s replacements for the originals, which had been painted by Jan van Eyck and were destroyed by the French in the 1790s.
