  • There are over 60 museums and galleries in Budapest documenting practically all aspect of Hungary's lengthy history, safe-keeping its treasures and serving as entertainment for the culturally thirsty. The repertoire of history, ethnography, music, decorative arts, and specialist museums host both internationally significant collections as well as smaller ones eliciting mostly local interest.

Our top pick is the Hungarian National Museum, the country's richest source of artefacts relating to the nation's history.

The next two are located on the picturesque Hero's Square: The Museum of Fine Arts famous for having the best collection of Spanish art outside of Span and the Art Gallery with exciting temporary contemporary exhibitions.

The grand Andrássy Avenue gives home to several museums, amongst them our next two pick, the House of Terror; an exhibition focusing on the horrors of the 50s and Secret Police activity. The Ferenc Liszt Memorial Museum is located inside the former flat of our beloved musician and composer.

Opposite the Parliament on Kossuth Square are two imposing building, one of which is our sixth pick, the Museum of Ethnography, including collections of artefacts reflecting Hungarian folk culture.

The gem of the City Park, the Vajdahunyad Castle houses the Museum of Agriculture, where amongst many others the annual Mangalica Festival is held.

The Dohány Street Synagogue houses the Jewish Museum, a touching exhibition focusing on Jewish culture and the tragic consequences of the Holocaust.
