It is impossible to get to know the city in its real local sense just by walking along Budapest's most famous boulevard or by taking part in a guided tour. It is by delving a little deeper and discovering hidden gems that one experiences the real taste of a city, and it is these Top 10 Off the Beaten Path things to do that will allow you to get to know that side of the city.
Our first two offbeat picks are the Jewish District with its modest little streets and tiny hidden treasures. This pleasant compact little neighbourhood is cram-packed with attractions such as the Orthodox Synagogue, Gozsdu Courtyard (our second pick)and numerous ruin pubs.
Our next three picks are underground activities: The Buda Castle Labyrinth; a maze of tunnels under the Castle District containing huge cavernous rooms, originally used as a cellar and bomb shelter, the Pálvölgyi Cave where it is possible to discover the natural assets and beautiful geological formations of Budapest unknown to so many, and the Cave Church; a Pauline chapel inside a cave carved into the Gellért Hill.
Our sixh pick is the Marzipan Museum in the Castle District exhibiting numerous marzipan figures that form an irresistible edible exhibition.
In seventh place is the alternative design shop Retrock; a great place to buy funky souvenirs and totally unique pieces of clothing and accessories.
Our eighth pick is the Memento Park where the statues once decorating the city during the Communist-era have been moved after the collapse of the regime.
Our last two picks are two aquatic activities: Bathing at the King's Bath, a beautiful historic Turkish bath house, one of the few remaining in Budapest, and wakeboarding at the Omszk Wakeboard Centrum also boasting with a beach and restaurant.
