Description:

  • The Resti Kocsma (pub) takes its name from the insalubrious railway station buffets where, in the old days, you could buy a luke warm coffee or stale bun for the journey. It has steadily attracted a crowd who find the old Socialist canteen decor amusing. It's also popular with tourists who were too young to experience life in Hungary before the fall of Communism and want to sample the food and atmosphere of the Socialist seventies. Immense time and care has gone into the decor. The walls are decorated with posters proclaiming corn productivity or the successful five year plan and there are collections of items that will bring tears of nostalgia to a Hungarian's eyes: a pioneer's red scarf or a blue plastic hula hoop. Everything is red, and the chairs and aluminium cutlery are straight from the menzas (canteens) which are now a thing of the past. One corner of the cellar bar is done out like a sixties living room with bakerlite radios, a motheaten sofa and a ca binet full of useless knick knacks. A selection of sixties hits plays over the crackly stereo and the Happy Dead Band performs live each night.
