Houses an overwhelming collection of over 20 000 items from countries such as India, China, Japan, Korea, Indonesia and Vietnam - the collection of one man!

  • Description:

    • The Ferenc Hopp Museum of Far Eastern Art, located at the Hero's Square end of the grand Andrássy Avenue, houses the collection of the wealthy Hungarian merchant Ferenc Hopp. He was the first great Hungarian traveller, collecting items that caught his fancy along the way, accumulating an overwhelming collection of over 20 000 items from countries such as India, China, Japan, Korea, Indonesia and Vietnam. The Ferenc Hopp library also boasts over 20 000 copies.

The museum – open from April through October from 10am to 6pm excluding Mondays – is located inside his former home, where smaller items such as paintings, pots, mirrors and everyday objects of the like are exhibited. His former garden gives home to larger items such as architectural fragments and larger stone sculptures, providing a picture of Asian culture on several levels. The permanent exhibition of his Chinese and Japanese collection including miniature carvings from Japan – which can be viewed all year round from 10am to 6pm – is displayed in the Ráth György Museum, located a few minutes' walk away along the Városligeti Fasor.
