Inner City Parish Church

Description:

  • The Inner City Parish Church dates back to the 12th century and is built in the Romanesque style, on the site of the grave of Bishop Gellért, the martyr who was said to have been killed by angry pagans. This is the oldest church in Pest. Nothing from the original building exists any longer having been built over through the centuries with Gothic features. In the 17th century, the Turkish invaders turned it into a mosque. After a fire destroyed part of the church in 1723 the rebuilding included the baroque style with an interior of neoclassical features. From the outside, it looks rather dilapidated, but inside, the attractive features are the Gothic chapel, the neo-Gothic carved pulpit, the 15th century Italian frescoes, and the 20th-century main altar. Daily mass is held at 6:30am and 6pm; Sunday mass is at 9am, 10am, noon, and 6pm.
