NileGuide Expert tip:
This is one of charming San Telmo's best offerings for an afternoon or evening gathering with friends. Order up a few picada platters of meat and cheese and a few liters of beer and you're set to go.
- Bar El Federal, a tried-and-true classic porteño watering hole, can be found packed to the gills with regulars and passers-by at any given hour of the day. Sturdy wooden tables line the sidewalk and double around the corner while gangs of neighborhood men crowd the long, antique sunken bar. Choose from an overwhelming 25-page menu of sandwiches, burgers, salads, and meat-and-cheese sampler platters to accompany your frosty domestic beer or ridiculously cheap regional Andean wine. In typical Buenos Aires bar fashion, you may have to sound your blowhorn to get the waiter or barman to glance your way—persistence will be the key to your success.
