The Best of NileGuide
- When you tire of the endless row of shops along Florida Street - a true paradise for consumers, but exhausting nonetheless - visitors to Buenos Aires' downtown will be happy to know that there are all kinds of cultural and historic sights and activities nearby. Some, like the Centro Cultural de España en Buenos Aires and the Centro Cultural Borges, located inside the beautiful shopping center Galerías Pacifico, are conveniently situated right on Florida, but offer a respite from the hustle and bustle outside with art exhibitions, film series, and performances. Stroll up to the northern end of Florida towards Avenida Santa Fe, a more upscale shopping street, to visit leafy Plaza San Martín, a lovely spot for wiling away an afternoon on a blanket overlooking the beautiful, English-designed Estación Retiro and the active northern port (and beautiful customs building - look for the two towers) of Buenos Aires. Or walk back towards the center of town to get to Plaza de Mayo, where a wealth of historical buildings and monuments await. Visit the Catedral Metropolitana, where the body of General San Martín lies, or the Cabildo, BA's original city hall. Visitors can also hop on the Line A subte, which originates in Plaza de Mayo, for a ride on the oldest functioning subway in the western hemisphere. The wooden cars, manual doors, large windows, and interior lanterns are a great backdrop for some truly atmospheric photos.
