- Plaza Juramento San Fernando Mercado de los Gitanos Mercado de San Cristobal Mercado de San Telmo Parque Lezama Plaza Francia Mataderos Mercado de las Pulgas Mercado de Frutos Shopping has never been so fun as in the markets of Buenos Aires! Big upscale shopping malls and browsing through the trendy shops along the big commercial avenues is fine and dandy, but every now and then the itch to find a true treasure leaves shoppers looking for something a bit different. So head to any - or all - of BA's best flea and art and craft markets to begin your search. Your first stop ought to be one of Buenos Aires' most popular and classic markets, the Mercado de San Telmo. This gorgeous covered structure occupies the interior of an entire city block, between Defensa and Bolivar, and Estados Unidos and Carlos Calvo streets in the center of charming San Telmo. Inside, friendly vendors sell everything from antiques to artisan products from Argentina, Peru, and Bolivia, vintage clothing, furniture, and food - cheese, bread, meat, fresh produce, and local specialty products such as dulce de leche liquor and homemade alfajor cookies. The market is particularly crowded on Sundays when the San Telmo street market is in full swing, so drop by on a weekday for more casual browsing. Many of BA's other great markets are located well off the beaten path, in neighborhoods that are well worth getting to know even if just for the markets. Pick through the piles of stuff at the delightfully disorganized Mercado de San Cristobal and the jam-packed Mercado de las Pulgas in Palermo, located just down the way from the lively weekend flea market in Parque los Andes. Further afield, the market at Tigre's Puerto de Frutos is ripe for the picking among lovers of unfinished wood and wicker products, brought in from artists and craftsmen living and working among the plentiful timber in the river delta.
