Description:
This is a sumptuous building, though its modern entrance on Calle Florida would make you think otherwise. Its back entrance on San Martín, however, still retains all of its original glory from its opening in 1915. This is a shopping gallery with a mix of stores without distinction and several kiosks that obscure the views, but look around at the walls and decorations. The architecture is a mix of Art Nouveau, Gothic, and neoclassical -- all heavily ornamented -- and was the creation of the architect who designed the now-closed Café del Molino next door to Congreso. Make sure to look also at the ornate elevator banks, which lead to the offices above. The building also houses the Piazzolla tango show. The Art Nouveau theater in which it sits was closed for nearly 40 years and was only recently restored. Of all the tango show palaces in Buenos Aires, this is the most beautiful.
