Too many tips to share on one answer !!
One of the main ones: "location, location, location."
since B.A. is a huge city, you should know where you are and where you are going to, all the time. And plan ahead... It will save you lots of trouble, time and $$.
Public transportation works ok and you can travel the city with by bus or metro for a few "pesos". it will also help you avoid the "not so safe" areas of the city, which are several and scattered across the map.
Be alert all the time cause opportunists are everywhere, but that's a world-wide issue.
As soon as you get there (here, actually), I'd recommend you to stop by our shop at Parana street, number 937 (from 14:00 to 19:00) and ask anything you want to know; free of charge of course!.
It's on one of the most tourist-friendly areas of the city, a few blocks from "teatro colon" and "libreria El Ateneo" (both amazing places to visit)
Have fun !

Since you're spending a bit of time in Buenos Aires, I would recommend getting under the skin of the city and checking out some of the more off-beat activities. Have a look at some of the Top 10 lists that I've compiled for Buenos Aires experiences, to give you an idea of what is available:
I particularly recommend taking a tour with Graffitimundo http://www.nileguide.com/destination/buenos-aires/things-to-do/graffitimundo/1106744 and Wicked Tourism http://www.nileguide.com/destination/buenos-aires/things-to-do/wicked-tourism/1111606
And as the heat of summer is cooling off a little bit, being outdoors is becoming more and more pleasant. My favorite outdoor spaces in BA are the Reserva Ecologica and Parque Lezama – check the links below for more info.
I hope that helps give you some ideas!
