Description:
A quiet retreat on one of the most idyllic, least-developed stretches of the Winooski River, the Ethan Allen Homestead is a shrine to Vermont's favorite son; years later, he and his Green Mountain Boys are still larger-than-life figures here. Though Allen wasn't actually born in Burlington, he settled here later in life on property confiscated from a British sympathizer during the Revolution. This reconstructed farmhouse is an enduring tribute to the war hero; an orientation center gives an intriguing multimedia accounting of Allen's life and other points of regional history. The house is open for tours for a small charge from mid-October to mid-May by appointment only (a day's advance notice is required), while the grounds are open year-round daily from dawn to dusk and free of charge.
