Actually a modern resort hotel, this national parador is on one of the loveliest beaches of the Bay of Cádiz at the western edge of the Old Town, and is one of the best places to stay in Cádiz. Don't be fooled by its modern appearance. It was originally built in 1929 as a private hotel that received good numbers of visits from the VIPs of that era. In the 1940s, it merged with Spain's network of government-owned, bureaucratically managed paradors, and in 1982 it was radically renovated into the boxy-looking but airy moderno structure you'll see today. This is the most luxurious setting in Cádiz's Old Town. Public rooms are accented with acres of white and russet-colored marble; there's a marble patio, a salon decked in rattan and cane, and spacious rooms that feature balconies with tables and chairs for relaxed ocean viewing. This parador attracts large numbers of foreign tourists, and -- in our opinion -- has a sense of bureaucratic and somewhat banal conservatism.
