Depending on exactly what you are into, there are bundles of cool things to do in Cairo. Top of the cool Cairo list must be to ride a camel around the outside of the pyramids enclosure – it's one of those perfect activities that combines an iconic landscape and sight with a traditional mode of transport, and is a load of fun to boot. The best time to do it is definitely at sunset, when you get a spectacular view of the pyramids, and also experience the call to prayer rolling in over the desert from all the mosques in Cairo.
Continuing the pyramids theme, another cool thing to do in Cairo is to actually go inside one of the pyramids. There are a limited number of (expensive) tickets available for the Great Pyramid each day, and a second pyramid is also open, usually the Pyramid of Khafre (Chephren to the Greeks). Although there's nothing to see as such, the sensation of being inside such a mass of rock is humbling, though not for the claustrophobic.
Exploring the markets of Cairo is a really cool way to spend your time – check out Attaba for a genuinely chaotic local experience, Azbakiya for a treasure-trove of used books, or head out to the camel market for something that little bit different.
The Solar CITIES Urban Eco Tour will give you an insight into two fascinating areas of Cairo – Darb al-Ahmar and Manshiyat Nasser – and you will learn how the inhabitants of these poor neighbourhoods are embracing green technologies in an attempt to improve their lives.
Finally, museums such as the Gayer Anderson Museum are a cool and quirky Cairo institution that shouldn't be missed.
