  • There are tons of fun things to do in Cairo for when you've had enough of looking at old stones! Top of the list has to be hiring out a felucca. These traditional sailing boats are fun to ride, and you get a great view of the city, but the best thing is that the captains are all really chilled, and don't mind you taking on a few drinks and having a small party – or picnic – if you want.

Taking a camel or a horse for a spin around the outside of the Pyramids enclosure is also a good laugh, and if you're a competent horse rider the stables are happy for you to gallop around as fast as you like.

One of the more unusual fun things to do in Cairo is to check out Dr Ragab's Pharaonic Village, which is a living museum of ancient Egyptian history. It's super-cheesy, so be prepared for that, but nothing beats dressing up in pharaonic gear and waving a sword from a chariot!

The Sufi dancing show at Wikalet al-Ghouri is fantastic (and free), or – for a different, more full-on type of fun – visit the camel market and hang out with the traders. Wandering Khan al-Khalili and bantering with the vendors there is also fine Cairo entertainment, though be careful they don't sweet talk you into buying too much tourist tat!

Finally, if you want to escape the city, head down to Wadi Degla, near Maadi, for a sniff of the great outdoors, Cairo style.
