Although Cairo is truly an urban sprawl in every sense of the word, it does have a lot of outdoor activities. One of the easiest and most fun ways to get outdoors in Cairo is to take a leisurely sail on the Nile. Felucca rides are available from lots of different spots, but the best place is down in Maadi, where there are no bridges to get in the way, and the river feels wide and spacious.
The western desert outside of the pyramids enclosure is another slice of the great outdoors in Cairo, and a wonderful place to hire a horse or camel and ride off into the sunset. And of course, the Giza Plateau itself is all outdoors, though be warned there's not much shade, and - given the crowds and touts - it hardly counts as relaxing!
For an area of classic greenery, check out al-Azhar Park, a gorgeous green space built over the top of an old rubbish tip in Islamic Cairo, and the perfect spot for a picnic. Or if you are feeling more adventurous, head out to the Wadi Degla nature reserve, and explore some of the trails there.
Getting outdoors in Cairo doesn't necessarily mean leaving the city. The Cairo Zoo is a nice space, as long as you don't mind your zoos a little old school in their approach to animal husbandry, and a tour around Dr Ragab's Pharaonic Village includes a boat ride through papyrus thickets and the chance to wander around an island, as well as the cheesiest fancy dress opportunity in the whole of pharaoh-dom.
Finally, if you want to be outdoors, but aren't so fussed about communing with nature, markets such as Khan al-Khalili and Attaba are a good place to be outside on your feet whilst enjoying a spot of haggling.
