With sunset camel rides around the Pyramids and lazy picnics floating down the longest river in the world, Cairo is a more romantic city than it might seem at first glance. There are plenty of romantic restaurants, too, that are perfect for snuggling up with your loved one.
The Citadel View restaurant is sat on a hill in al-Azhar Park with a view of the twin minarets of the Mohammed Ali Mosque, so is in a very romantic location. As well as traditional Egyptian cuisine, it also serves authentic French food, so is just right for romance. Another restaurant serving superb French food is the Vendome in the Sofitel El Gezirah, which as well as a relaxed ambience also has great views of the Nile.
Italian is another romance food, and the super-cosy Cortigiano is deservedly popular with Cairene couples. Seasons restaurant is a more opulent Italian affair in the Four Seasons at the First Residence.
There's something about the Far East that brings out the romantic in lots of us, and Cairo has some great romantic Asian restaurants. Lai Thai and the Bird Cage both serve wonderful Thai food in restrained surroundings with excellent service. Spice restaurant offers top notch Cantonese food, as well as a romantic view of the Nile, and has a dim sum buffet every Friday.
Sud is a good bet if you want a fix of the Mediterranean, and has a Nile side terrace too. And if you want to dine al-fresco right next to the Nile, Sequoia offers a wide range of food, including excellent sushi, though it does get busy and sometimes a little too boisterous to be truly intimate.
