Cairo can be very touristy, which is why finding off the beaten path things to do is so rewarding. The Camel Market, situated around an hour outside Cairo, is about as off the beaten path as it gets, and is a fascinating place to learn about and witness the ongoing trade in these incredible animals. Warning, it's not really for the faint hearted.
Manshiyat Nasser is where many of Cairo's rubbish collectors, known as the Zabaleen, live. Few locals ever bother going there, but the Solar CITIES Urban Eco Tour will not only introduce you to the area, but will give you the opportunity to learn about how the local community are embracing green technologies in an effort to improve their lives.
Market areas such as Azbakiya Book Market, Attaba, and in particular the fabric market of Wikalit al-Balah, are not often visited by tourists, but well worth checking out. There are so many museums in Cairo that it would be nigh on impossible to visit them all, but one of the better off the beaten path ones is the decidedly quirky yet engaging Agricultural Museum.
Although the Dahshur pyramid complex isn't really off the beaten path, it's been included here because it's the least visited, and therefore most tranquil, of all the pharaonic sites in Cairo, and so a good place to visit if you want the pyramid experience without the crowds.
And if you really do want to get away from it all, head out to the edge of Cairo and immerse yourself in the great outdoors of Wadi Degla, another area of the city that is all but ignored by most inhabitants.
