Recently renovated and very conveniently located on the edge of downtown, the Semiramis is a perfectly fine hotel. Service is friendly, if not as smooth as at the Four Seasons, and facilities are commodious. Substantial differences in the price of rooms at the front of the hotel and the back tell the story of the view: At the front, it's as good as the Hyatt, while at the back, well, it's just not that great. Decor is a little more ostentatious than it should be, a reminder that this hotel -- like the Cairo Marriott in Zamalek -- does a brisk summer business with tourists from the Gulf, but it remains a staple of diplomats coming to Cairo to work at one of the nearby embassies or at the Arab League just across the street.
