Description:

  • When the heat and dust of Cairo begin to get the best of you, Pub 28's cool, dark interior may be just what you need. Though conveniently located in the center of town, this well-established expat watering hole takes you out of the city with its funky faux-candle light fixtures, wood-paneled walls, heavy wood tables and high chairs, and welcoming ambience. A pleasant combination of good service and reasonable prices explain its enduring popularity among Cairo residents. The menu is a mix of Western and Egyptian, and the food is tasty. Try the filet au beurre du chef after a starter of French onion soup, or stay with the Egyptian option and have a shish tawook (succulent cubes of chicken and vegetables roasted over a charcoal brazier). Pub 28 stocks both local and imported beers and wines, and a small-but-delicious variety of desserts to close the deal. The only downside is its small size. Get here early or reserve ahead, particularly on Thursday and Friday nights, when it can be packed to capacity and too noisy for easy conversation by 8pm.
