Description:
- Rebuilt in 1754 by Abdurahman Katkhuda, this gateway protected the original entrance to the Citadel. The great brass-bound wooden gateway is particularly famous for an incident involving Mohammed Ali. Having taken over power in 1811, he became determined to undermine the Mamlukes who were still very much present in Egypt. He invited them into the fort under the pretext of a celebration for his son, at the same time giving them false hope for a reconciliation. Once they had walked into the fort, the mighty gates of Bab el Azab slammed shut behind them. An Albanian army suddenly appeared, and the last of the Mamlukes were eliminated from the Egyptian political stage.
