Description:
- Eid el-Fitr, the 'Lesser Feast', marks the end of Ramadan and is a stark contrast to the sobriety of the holy fasting month. For three days Egyptians consume enormous amounts of sweets and cake while reveling both privately and in the streets. Gifts are exchanged and often include a new set of clothing. It is also a time when people give their Muslim domestic help and maintenance workers a gift of money or food. Many families travel, and public transportation is usually booked full. It can also be a harrowing time for foreigners, as naughty boys target them with snap dragons and firecrackers.
