Description:
- Coptic Christian pilgrims from all over Egypt descend upon the Church of St. Sergius in Old Cairo once a year to celebrate the sojourn of the Holy Family in Egypt. Inside the old church, probably built in the 5th century, is the crypt where the Holy Family is believed to have stayed. The dense crowd attending the annual event makes it difficult to enter the crypt, but the scent of incense and murmurs in the ancient Coptic tongue carry into the small church itself.
