St Shenuti Church

Description:

  • This church is dedicated to St. Shenuti who is the most famous of the Coptic saints. It was built in the 7th Century, but underwent many changes since. At a certain point it was actually used as a mosque under Caliph el Hakim, then reverted to its original status as a church. The church is 35 x 15 x 15 meters (115 x 50 x 50 feet) , and unusually the church floor is two meters (seven feet) below street level. The central iconostasis is beautiful red cedar wood inlaid with ivory and seven icons. There is a southern sanctuary dedicated to Archangel Michael.
