- Although the Pyramids are Egypt's no.1 attraction, in my opinion the Citadel contains so much of interest that I feel it should be number two on anybody's list of "places to see". It is easy to access, not expensive to visit, and contains a number of museums as well as the Mosque of Muhammad Ali (NOT Cassius Clay...!?!) Pre-dating the days of the Crusades, this was the almost impregnable Egyptian headquarters of Salah El Din (known as Saladin to westerners). Water was transported from the Nile to the Citadel by an Aqueduct that was mostly hidden from view, ensuring that the occupants could survive a siege lasting several months or more... Well worth a few pounds of anybody's money..
