Hi there - food in Egypt is very reasonably priced by western standards and street food is very cheap. At the moment there are about 6 Egyptian pounds (LE) to the US dollar. A big meal of koshari, one of Egypt's delicious "must try" dishes will cost you about 5LE. Koshary is a carb lovers delight - rice, lentils, chickpeas, pasta, with crispy fried golden onions. There's also a vinergary tomato sauce and a lemon-garlic sauce to go with it. Fabulous and VERY filling!

Egyptian sandwiches are also very cheap - fill them with falafel or fries and salad. Falafel also costs next to nothing - 25 piastres (100 piastres to the pound) for one patty. Made from ground broad beans, parsley, chilli and spices and dusted with sesame seeds before frying - felafel is mmmmm.

Or try, for sweets, rice and milk from somewhere like Malky's - that's a bit more expensive at 15LE.

Of course, there are plenty of far more expensive restaurants that serve Egyptian food too. There's also all the usual chains like KFC, Maccas, Cook Door, Tikka, Pizza Hut, Dominoes etc. etc. Pizza is often quite good in Egypt.

Fresh fruit is usually plentiful, very good and also very cheap. You usually gets what's in season and what's best from the stalls on the street although it's also available at supermarkets. Oh and fresh bread from a little local baker will only set you back 5LE for 4 very tasty pieces.

Food in Egypt is excellent. One word of caution, if you're vegetarian and eating in Egyptian restaurants. There's lots of vegetable dishes but they are often, almost always, made with chicken or rabbit sock - you usually need to probe a bit deeper into the ingredients.

All the best

I have good new for you; Egyptian food could be very delicious and cheap. The most popular and must-eat food in Egypt is :
- Koshary made of rice, pasta, chick-pea, tomato and fried onion. You can get a big dish for 5 -7 Egyptian pounds. Famous Koshary restaurants in Cairo include Abu Tarek and El-Tahrir.
- Ful and falafel both are made of beans. A sandwich costs 1-2 Egyptian pounds.
- Kebab and Kufta (beef and lamb). The price of one kilo in a restaurant ranges between 90 to 120 Egyptian pounds.
- Salads : normal salad, teheeny (made of sesame) and Baba Ganough (aubergine).
- Bitter bread.
- For desert : Om Ali (a bread pudding served with milk, butter, coconut and sugar). Absolutely gorgeous.
- Rice pudding
- Basbousa and Kunafa.
