Calgary gets busy during the Calgary Stampede, as tourists from around the world come to see our cowboys, rodeo, and maybe try horse-back riding for themselves. As a result, it can be difficult to book a room in July.
The Stampede Grounds are not far from Downtown. In fact, you could easily walk from Stephen Ave. to the Grounds in about 30 minutes. During Stampede week, Calgary's corporate culture transforms back into its cowboy roots. Stampede festivities Downtown make it the perfect place to enjoy the week! However, it is not always possible to find a room Downtown.
The next best options are hotels along Macleod Trail. The LRT, aka C-Train, runs along Macleod, and this is the most efficient way to get to the Stampede Grounds, as parking near the Grounds is limited. These hotels will also allow you more freedom to explore the cowboy themed festivities around Calgary, such as the famous pancake breakfasts like the one at Chinook Centre.
The hotels near Banff Trail are a lot farther away from the Stampede Grounds but very near to the LRT, which makes it easy to commute back and forth. Although less than ideal in terms of proximity to the Grounds, many of these hotels are a great value, and from here it is a quick trip on the Trans-Canada Highway (16th Ave.) out to the Kananaskis Country, where you can do some horse-back riding of your own!
