Calgarians love to hike. In fact, one of the best Calgary success stories is Mountain Equipment Co-op, which originated as a hiking and camping store, and it's grown into a Western Canadian institution. With mountain so close, it's hard not to want to get out and explore the world. But, as far as hiking inside the city goes, there's a fair amount of that, too.
Fish Creek Park is a huge valley in the south part of Calgary. This little creek gently passes by, as you stroll along on the nicely kept pathways. Down in the valley there are plenty of bridges to keep your feet dry and out of the creek, but not all the paths are paved. Most of them are actually shale. But, it's nice to get back to nature without having to leave the city. While you're in the woods, it's hard to remember that the city is all around you.
Nose Hill is a massive park in the north. It's so big, in fact, that from the south it looks like it's the end of the city, but it's not even close to that. This park has a lot of walking trails, and it's one of the most common dog walking areas in Calgary. The views of the city and the mountains are probably some of the best in Calgary.
Edworthy Park is on the Bow River. As the landscape begins to go down into the river valley, you can see the best views of Calgary's skyline. It is without question the best place for seeing downtown Calgary. It is also a beautiful, wooded area.
