  • Being active in Calgary is the most satisfying part of living here. We have a rich legacy of athletic activities passed down to us from the 1988 Winter Olympics. But, we also have lots of open space to enjoy and explore. Calgary is a perfect city for biking or strolling, and it's also great for skiing or skating in winter.

Canada Olympic Park is a multi-sport facility left to us from the Winter Games. This ski hill is entirely within the city limits, and has North America's largest urban half-pipe. Not many cities provide opportunities to fit in a few hours of skiing in between other activities, but COP makes it possible. It also has some of Calgary's best cross-country terrain, one of the world's best bobsleigh tracks, and in the summer it turns into a mountain bike park.

The Olympic Oval is the speed skating track used in 1988. It still operates and is home to many Olympians, who train there. The public skating times are limited, but the experience is excellent for the whole family. This is the best ice in the world.

Olympic Plaza hosts a number of events throughout the year, but it is turned into a skating rink in winter. At Christmas, this is the most festive place in the city, with the trees all done up in lights and the shops prepared for the holidays.

The parks in Calgary are expansive and beautiful. Fish Creek Park and Nose Hill Park are the two largest. You can spend a whole day in either and only see a small part of it. Prince's Island Park is an escape from downtown, and it regularly has events, such as Shakespeare in the Park. A system of pathways connects the parks, because it stretches all along the Bow River, which cuts from NW to SE. It's perfect for biking, rollerblading, or jogging.

The are a few climbing centers in Calgary. Stronghold, the Calgary Climbing Centre, the University of Calgary, and Mount Royal University all offer indoor walls.
