Calgary has a lot of public, natural areas, and as a city, we like to get out and enjoy them. Getting out for a bike ride or picnic on a summer day has to be savored. We only get 5 months of summer weather in Calgary! But, in winter, we also get out to skate, ski, and just enjoy seeing the beauty of freshly fallen snow on the trees and in the mountains.
Canada Olympic Park is one of Calgary best outdoor spots. If you like to ski, bike, or try bobsleigh, you'll love this spot. The ski hill is mostly man-made snow, but it's a great place to learn how to ski before heading to the mountains. It's also nice if you don't have a whole day free to go skiing. At COP, even just a few hours is all you need! The bike trails in the summer months have become very popular, as they operate the lifts so that you can bike down the hill. Very fun!
The major parks, such as Fish Creek and Nose Hill, are great for walking dogs or going on bike rides. Nose Hill offers some of the best views of Calgary and the mountains. Fish Creek has a public lake near the east end, Sikome Lake. It is a fenced off recreation area that's open from May to September. The sandy beaches are some of the few Calgary has to offer, because most of the lake communities in Calgary are private.
Heritage Park is always a safe bet. There's so much to do there, and kids can go back over and over again without getting bored. Parents love it, too. It's a great way to be outdoors, and even on cold days, there's lots to do indoors, too.
Calgary has a lot of golf courses. Sirocco is one of the best. But, Heritage Pointe is also great. There's a lot of fun courses available.
