Neighborhood Description

17th Avenue SW

Known as the Red Mile, 17th Avenue SW holds the distinction of being the Calgary Flames party-zone ever since the 2004 run to the Stanley Cup Finals. This stretch of road runs east to west, just south of the downtown core, essentially from the Scotiabank Saddledome to 14th Street SW, and is regarded as one of Calgary's best walkways and shopping districts. It is also one of the most tourist-laden communities in the city, especially during Stampede week.

Much of the street is dominated by popular sports mega-bars, such as Melrose Cafe & Bar (known as the heart of the Red Mile), and popular meeting spots, such as Caffe Beano, Nellie's, and Streeps Teahouse. This community brings out a broad assortment of Calgary's out-and-about crowd. But 17th isn't without its fair share of hiddem gems and local favorites. In fact, you'll find some of Calgary's best patios, shops, pizzas (see: Wicked Wedge), and treats here. It's a good place to stroll, especially if you need a little break from the Stampede grounds.

Of course, 17th is a trendy, shopping-focused area. So, if money is tight, try chilling out at Tompkins Park, located on 17th ave and 8th street. This park is great for people watching, and it has nice benches and a small gazebo that are located near the street. What's best, it's very near Kawa, which is one of Calgary's best espresso bars.

17th has a huge variety of restaurants. If you want vegan, try the Coup; Lebanese, try Shwarma Knight; or, if you really want indulgence, head east to Crave Cupcakes, a Calgary must-try. Legendary!

One of the local's favorite pubs is the Ship & Anchor, which offers a great selection of brews and an awesome patio. Or, try the Rose & Crown, which is another great pub.
