• Strolling around downtown Calgary, one doesn't have to go far to find a good cup of coffee. However, for the true coffee connoisseur, it certainly worth the detour to take a small trip off the beaten path to Phil & Sebastian, located in the community of Marda Loop. Offering a rotating selection of direct-trade beans, Phil & Sebastian exhibit a passion for coffee that is considered by many to be second to none in the city. While it is certainly not the poor man's coffee shop (a cup of fresh clover-brewed coffee can run anywhere from $3 to $8), the local crowd of java afficionados that gather at the shop would certainly argue it is worth the extra expense. P&S roasts their beans at their own roasterie, located just across town. Moreover, the barista's at P&S are some of the best you'll find anywhere; for two years running, finalists of the Canadian National Barista Championship have included competitors from the small but mighty shop. In spite of its prestigious reputation, however, the atmosphere at Phil & Sebastian is refreshingly unpretentious for a high-end coffee shop.
