Cave & Basin National Historic Site of Canada

  • User Review:

    • This was the birth place of Banff National Park & the Canadian National Park system. It all started around the hot springs as a remote & isolated tourist spa for the rich and famous. The hot springs were originally claimed & developed by 3 young 'working' fellows but the Canadian Pacific Railway wanted this attraction to develop for their own. The CPR simply ask their buddies in the Canadian Government who expropriated the place then turned it into a park with all the associated free publicity while the railway was able to receive all the profits of development. An ignoble birth for Canada's park system. It is no longer a swimming pool / spa but has been restored to give you a feeling of what it was once like. A few interesting exhibits, a grotto where the hot water comes out of the ground and a very rare hot springs snail. Worth a brief visit.
