Historic Calgary

Description:

Calgary may be a young city but it’s also rich with history, a lot of which is weaved into the vibrancy of the city. You can learn a lot about the history and the culture of the city and the region if you have a couple days here.

Day 1 - Calgary

If you’re interested in the history of Calgary, and Western Canada, the Glenbow Museum is probably the best place to go. While you're there, make sure you learn a bit about the Calgary Stampede & Exhibition, because that's where you're going next ... The Stampede isn’t just a huge party -- it’s also a big part of the city’s history. Check their website(www.calgarystampede.com) for interactive archives featuring the history of the Stampede and then walk around the venue on your own. Now go eat at Rouge restaurant in Inglewood, set in the former home of A.E. Cross, one of the original financiers of the Stampede. The gorgeous house is a provincial heritage site, and is located on the bank of the Bow River and once you see it, you’ll know why it’s often rented out for wedding and private events.

Day 2 - Calgary

Fort Calgary was actually barracks for the Canadian Mounties more than 100 years ago, and was rebuilt by volunteers in the 90s as a replica of the original. Now it's a museum where you can learn about the Mounties and the people of Calgary and the interactive displays are actually really cool. It’s a great place to bring kids. And right outside the Fort, you’ll find the river pathway, where you can spend the rest of your day walking along the riverbank. And now for a delicious component of Calgary's history: Peters' Drive-In is legendary in the city, and has been around since 1964. Fun fact: Peter’s once sold 4,000 milkshakes in one day. You have to try one to know why.
